J.A.K.S. opened it's doors in 1980 and has been featured in Black Belt Magazine as School of the Month. The head instructor, Grand Master Tom Joerg (pronounced Yerg), received his black belt in Isshinryu Karate while attending the University of South Carolina.

Grand Master Joerg then began studying American Karate under Joe Corley's head instructor, Howard Vanderbeck. During his years with Mr. Vanderbeck, Grand Master Joerg was very active in the national karate tournament circle, traveling hundreds of miles just to compete against the best martial artists in the country.

Shortly after receiving his black belt in American Karate, Grand Master Joerg returned to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and opened J.A.K.S.

Grand Master Joerg has published several articles in Black Belt Magazine, and he was the subject of a feature article in Black Belt Magazine which discussed Grand Master Joerg's courageous recovery from an attack that resulted in the loss of his left eye and the subsequent incarceration of his assailant. It should be noted that, while Grand Master Joerg lost an eye, he was still able to quickly subdue his attacker.

J.A.K.S. offers classes for adults, the handicapped, and a special Kids Class for younger children. Both of our outdoor tournaments also feature a Handicap Division for persons with disabilities. J.A.K.S. black belts and students are very active at tournaments all across the United States.

J.A.K.S. occupies approximately 2,500 square feet of workout space that includes a boxing ring, several heavy bags, speed bags, skip ropes, stretching machines, weight machines, and other modern training tools. Students wishing to pursue heavier contact sparring may also participate in the West Shore Boxing/Kickboxing Club.
