Grand Master Tom Joerg is a 10th degree black belt in American Karate and is certified as a USA boxing corner coach. He began studying karate under Joe Corley's head instructor, Howard Vanderbeck. During his years with Mr. Vanderbeck, Grand Master Joerg was very active in the national karate tournament circle, traveling hundreds of miles just to compete against the best martial artists in the country.

Shortly after receiving his black belt in American Karate, Grand Master Joerg returned to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and opened JAKS.

Grand Master Joerg has published several articles in Black Belt Magazine, and he was the subject of a feature article in Black Belt Magazine which discussed Mr. Joerg's courageous recovery from an attack that resulted in the loss of his left eye and the subsequent incarceration of Grand Master Joerg's assailant. It should be noted that, while Mr. Joerg lost an eye, he was still able to quickly subdue his attacker.
